The Flight Instructor Rating Training program is the practical next step for commercial pilots who want to develop their careers as professional flight instructors. At OCBT Flight Centre, our 30-hour flight training program focuses on developing the flying, demonstration, communication, and instructional skills required to teach students effectively from the cockpit.
Your training combines hands-on flight instruction, teaching demonstrations, instructional techniques, aircraft handling, student-error recognition, and real-world flight-training scenarios. With a strong focus on safety, professionalism, and effective instruction, we prepare you to demonstrate not only how to fly an aircraft, but also how to confidently guide others as they develop their own aviation skills.

Our Flight Instructor Rating Training is designed for pilots who are ready to move from flying for themselves to teaching others how to fly safely and confidently. From demonstrating flight exercises to coaching students in real-world situations, every stage of training at OCBT Flight Centre is focused on developing your instructional ability and professional confidence.
You’ll complete 30 hours of practical instructor training with experienced flight instructors, learning how to demonstrate manoeuvres, recognize and correct student errors, manage training flights, and communicate effectively from the cockpit. The goal is to help you become a capable, safety-focused instructor who is ready for the next stage of a professional aviation career.

Program Requirements and Eligibility:
Develop the practical teaching and flying skills required to progress toward a Class 4 Flight Instructor Rating – Aeroplane. The program focuses on learning how to demonstrate flight exercises, identify and correct student errors, and safely provide effective instruction from the cockpit.
Prerequisites
- Hold a Commercial Pilot Licence – Aeroplane or Airline Transport Pilot Licence – Aeroplane with the appropriate valid medical certification.
- Complete the required Flight Instructor Rating ground-school training.
- Successfully complete the required Transport Canada written examination before the instructor-rating flight test.
- For admission to the initial instructor-rating flight test, an aeroplane applicant generally requires at least 230 hours total flight time, including 20 hours of instrument time, of which at least 10 hours must be instrument flight time, subject to applicable integrated-course credits.
Flight Training Requirements
- Complete a minimum of 30 hours of dual Flight Instructor Rating training.
- Training focuses on:
- Overall pilot proficiency
- Demonstration and teaching of flight exercises
- Effective cockpit communication
- Recognition and correction of student errors
- Pre-flight and post-flight instructional techniques
- Student supervision and decision-making
- Safe and professional instructional practices
- The 30 hours must include at least 5 hours of training in teaching instrument flight skills. Transport Canada permits a maximum of 5 of the required 30 hours to be completed using an approved aeroplane simulator or flight training device.
- Successfully complete the required Flight Instructor Rating flight test to the applicable Transport Canada standard.
