The Flight Instructor Rating Ground School is designed to prepare experienced pilots for the transition from flying an aircraft to teaching others how to fly. At OCBT Flight Centre, our 30-hour ground school develops the instructional knowledge, communication skills, and teaching techniques needed for flight instructor training.
Throughout the course, you will explore effective teaching methods, lesson planning, student assessment, aviation safety, flight-training procedures, and the responsibilities of a professional flight instructor. Our goal is to help you develop the confidence and instructional foundation needed to move successfully into the practical Flight Instructor Rating Training program.

Our Flight Instructor Rating Ground School is designed for commercial pilots ready to take the next step in their aviation career. Through 30 hours of focused ground instruction, OCBT Flight Centre helps you develop the teaching knowledge, communication skills, and instructional techniques required to guide future pilots.
You’ll learn how to prepare effective lessons, explain flight concepts clearly, assess student progress, manage common learning challenges, and apply professional instructional practices. With structured training and experienced guidance, you’ll build a strong foundation before moving into the practical Flight Instructor Rating Training program.

Program Requirements and Eligibility:
Build the theoretical knowledge and instructional foundation required to progress toward a Class 4 Flight Instructor Rating – Aeroplane. OCBT Flight Centre provides 30 hours of instructor ground school, exceeding Transport Canada’s minimum requirement of 25 hours.
Prerequisites
- Applicants pursuing a Class 4 Flight Instructor Rating must hold a Commercial Pilot License – Aeroplane (CPL-A) or Airline Transport Pilot License – Aeroplane (ATPL-A).
- Hold the appropriate valid medical certification required for the license being exercised.
- A strong understanding of commercial-pilot-level aviation knowledge and flight operations is recommended.
Ground School Requirements
- Complete 30 hours of Flight Instructor Rating Ground School at OCBT Flight Centre.
- Training includes:
- Principles of learning and instructional techniques
- Preparation and use of lesson plans
- Preparatory ground instruction
- Pre-flight briefings and post-flight debriefings
- Effective presentation and demonstration techniques
- Student assessment and progress evaluation
- Flight safety and instructor responsibilities
- Review of flight exercises and instructional procedures
- Applicants for the Class 4 rating must obtain a minimum of 70% on the Transport Canada Flight Instructor Rating – Aeroplane Class 4 (AIRAF) written examination.
